Today I had a good food day with two work Christmas meals. I went to breakfast at A. Baker with one group and enjoyed lunch at Pod Food with another group. Two weeks ago I went to the Hyatt Hotel for a buffet lunch and next week I have another lunch at the Hellenic Club.
A. Baker is situated in the New Acton Complex. It looks like it has replaced Flint Dining Room and Bar which was destroyed when fire swept through that part of the Diamant Hotel. What’s odd is the Flint website says it will reopen soon. I wonder where. Inside A. Baker the burn scars have been left so that everyone can see the damage. I didn’t capture any food images because I was with work mates who aren’t aware of my food fetishes. That said, when I visited the toilet I did capture a couple of photographs which you’ll see when you scroll down.
A. Baker has gained a bit of a reputation for good food but hit and miss service. I highly recommend reading the review by Tara at http://inthetaratory.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/a-baker/ Tara describes what I witnessed when I came in. That said, I get that this is the way of A. Baker. Last week in The Canberra Times Food and wine annual (4 December) A. Baker made 19 on their list of 20 and in the first sentence the phrase “teething problems” is mentioned. These teething problems relate to “service and organisation”.
The brunch menu is really interesting. I was so tempted to go for a baked egg or a 65 °C egg or even a poached egg, however, I knew I also had a lunch to attend so I settled for the toasted sourdough bread and crushed avocado plus a couple of flat white coffees. The bread was really nice and I felt very satisfied with my breakfast. For Tara’s benefit the knives provided for breakfast were outstanding. They were very good for cutting thick crusty toast. I’m sure the restaurant and patrons will remember us from this morning, we had Christmas crackers and we wore the coloured paper hats 😃
I’d definitely go back to A. Baker again, hopefully with Bron when we have more time and don’t feel rushed.
At lunch I went with another group of work mates to Pod Food in Pialligo. I’ve never been there before. It’s a nice outside setting and when the days get warmer later in summer I’m sure it will be more comfortable. The lunch time menu is really good. We agreed we’d all enjoy an entrée and main course. I chose a double whammy of pork (as you do and as I did recently in Darwin).
I’d happily come back to Pod Food for a meal.
For dinner tonight I needed something light given how well I’ve eaten today. Can you believe it…no meat 😜
